Five ways to make hydrogen at home
Every machine in this category uses electrolysis: an electric current splits water, and the hydrogen gas is dissolved into water or delivered as gas. What differs is where the machine lives and what it feeds.
Countertop or under-sink (Hydrogen-only, plumbed)
- Adds dissolved hydrogen without changing pH.
- Echo H2 (built-in 5-stage filter), Echo Flow (no filter, needs RO or whole-house prefiltration), Echo One (built-in RO plus UV).
- Suits a household that wants hydrogen water from a tap.
Several water types, one unit (Multi-water ionizer)
- Echo Ultimate makes hydrogen, filtered, alkaline (4 levels) and acidic (4 levels) water.
- Echo labels the acidic water for cleaning and topical use only, not drinking.
- Suits buyers who also want cleaning water modes.
Battery-powered batches (Portable bottle)
- Echo Flask (sold in a bundle with the Echo H2): 12 oz, USB-C, about 7 cycles per charge.
- Makes one bottle at a time on a 10 or 20 minute cycle.
Not for drinking water (Bath and gas)
- Echo Revive dissolves hydrogen into bathwater on 15, 30 or 45 minute cycles.
- Echo Refresh is a hydrogen gas generator for inhalation, with up to 1,800 mL/min of hydrogen output.
Buyer tip: Start with where the water comes out. If you want it on tap, you are choosing between plumbed units and their faucet options. If you want it in a bag at work, a bottle is the only type that travels.
PPB, PPM and how hydrogen is measured
- 1 ppm = 1,000 ppb: Parts per million vs parts per billion; same quantity, different scale
- About 1.6 ppm: Approximate saturation in open water at room temperature and sea-level pressure
- 1.21 to 1.46 ppm: Listed output of the Echo Flow, H2 and Ultimate (1,210 to 1,460 ppb)
Read PPB and PPM the same way (Units)
- Some brands quote 1,440 ppb, others 1.44 ppm. They are identical.
- Our product pages list Echo output in ppm.
High numbers need context (Above saturation)
- Figures above about 1.6 ppm (Echo One lists 2 to 4 ppm; Echo Flask up to 8 ppm on a 20 minute cycle) usually depend on a sealed or pressurized vessel.
- Hydrogen leaves water once it is open to air, so ask when and where the reading was taken.
How concentration is measured
| Method | What it is | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Titration reagent drops | Colored reagent added drop by drop; the drop count estimates ppm. | Which reagent, and at what time after dispensing? |
| Dissolved hydrogen meter | An electronic probe reading dissolved hydrogen directly. | Which meter, and when was it calibrated? |
| Lab analysis | Third-party testing, for example gas chromatography. | Can I see the report? (The Echo Flask lists H2 Analytics certification.) |
| ORP (mV) | Oxidation-reduction potential. Affected by pH and other factors; not a direct hydrogen reading. | Read ORP (Echo Flow: up to -500 mV) as a separate spec. |
Watch out: Ask for the ppm at the rated flow rate (Echo H2: 1.2 L/min; Echo Ultimate hydrogen mode: 1.0 L/min). A slow, small pour may read differently from a full pitcher.
Membranes, filtration and your water source
What the membrane does (SPE / PEM)
- SPE (solid polymer electrolyte) and PEM (proton exchange membrane) describe a membrane between the electrodes.
- It keeps the hydrogen side separate from the oxygen side, so oxygen and other gases formed at the other electrode can be routed away.
- Echo lists SPE and PEM for the Revive, Refresh and Flask; ask us about other models.
Built in, or upstream? (Filtration)
- Echo H2: 5-stage filter, rated 1,056 gal (4,000 L).
- Echo Ultimate: 5-stage filter, rated 1,000 gal of chlorine and 500 gal of chloramine reduction per cartridge.
- Echo One: 5-stage reverse osmosis plus UV.
- Echo Flow: no filter; needs RO or whole-house prefiltration.
Water source checklist
- City water with chloramine. Check the chloramine rating, not only chlorine. The Ultimate lists a lower gallon rating for chloramine.
- Well, softened or RO water. Tell us your source. Mineral content changes how electrolysis machines behave, and some units are designed for prefiltered water only.
- Water pressure. The Echo Flow lists a 10 psi minimum.
- pH. The Echo H2 and Flow list no change to pH. The Ultimate's alkaline and acidic modes deliberately change pH; Echo advises against drinking its alkaline water above Level 2 (about pH 9) and says the acidic water is not for drinking.
Buyer tip: If you already have an RO or whole-house system, a filter-less unit like the Echo Flow avoids paying for filtration twice. If you have nothing upstream, a unit with its own filter is simpler.
What each install needs
| Model | Install | Size, weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Echo H2 | Counter, or under-sink with Echo H2 Faucet | 6.5 x 10.5 x 14.5 in, 10 lb | Extra faucet; keeps your kitchen faucet. |
| Echo Ultimate | Counter, or under-sink with Echo Digital Faucet | 10 x 9 x 15 in, 14.7 lb | Counter install: no plumbing changes. |
| Echo Flow | Under-sink, secondary faucet | 9.5 x 9.5 x 3.5 in, 3.85 lb | Needs 15/16 to 1 in counter hole; can feed fridge and ice maker. |
| Echo One | Under-counter, secondary faucet | 16 x 8 x 12 in | 110V or 220V. Pre-order, listed as coming soon. |
| Echo Revive | Freestanding, on wheels | 15 x 11 x 15 in, 40 lb | No plumbing; wheels and handle. |
| Echo Refresh | Freestanding, carry handles | 15 x 10 x 14 in, 30 lb | No plumbing; 30 to 360 min timer. |
Watch out: Hydrogen is a flammable gas. The Echo Refresh lists up to 1,800 mL/min of hydrogen and 600 mL/min of oxygen. Ask for the safety and ventilation instructions, keep it away from flames and heat, and follow the manual.
Read the certificate, not the badge
NSF/ANSI and WQA (Water filtration)
- Echo Ultimate lists NSF/ANSI Standard 42, which covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odor.
- Echo H2 lists WQA certification. Ask which standard and which contaminants it covers.
Ask for documents (Electrical and FDA)
- Our Echo pages list no UL, ETL or CSA mark. Ask us.
- None claim FDA clearance on our pages. A 510(k) covers one device for a stated use; if a seller claims one, ask for the number and scope.
Purchase price is only the start

Your pre-purchase checklist
- What is the dissolved hydrogen output in ppm (or ppb), and at what flow rate?
- How was it measured: reagent, meter or lab report? Can I see it?
- Does it use an SPE/PEM membrane?
- Does it filter, or does it need prefiltered water? Will it work with my water source?
- Does it change pH, and which outputs are meant for drinking?
- Which faucet, countertop hole and power outlet does the install need?
- How often are filters replaced, and what do they cost?
- Which filtration and electrical certifications does it carry?
- What does the warranty exclude, and do I need to register it?
