Red Light Therapy Panel Buying Guide

Read a red light spec sheet with confidence: wavelength, irradiance, LED count, flicker, EMF and FDA status, so you can match a panel or device to your space, outlet and budget.

Prefer a PDF? Every section below is also in our free red light therapy buying guide. Open any page in our red light therapy collection and use the "Free Buying Guide" form to get it by email.

Panels, wearables and pro systems

Red light devices range from a handheld unit you strap on to a six-foot panel on a motorized stand. The right format depends on how much of the body you want lit at once and where it will live. (Shopping for a full-body bed or pod? See our companion Red Light Bed Buying Guide, which also covers our own Peak Muscle Recovery Basecamp, Ridgeline and Summit 360 beds.)

Small panels (Tabletop)

  • About 10 to 13 in tall, sit on a desk or counter
  • Light one area at a time (face, one side of the torso)
  • Examples: Renew Red Light Small Panel (64 LEDs, 7.7 lb), RevitalCore X-Aura Pro (72 LEDs), ZAQ IRZA (red, blue, yellow and infrared)
  • Suits a first device or a dedicated face and neck setup

Tall panels on a stand or door (Full body)

  • 36 to 75 in tall; light the front or back of the body in one pass
  • Base stand, door hook, hanging kit or rolling stand
  • Examples: EXESAS 600 LED (60 in), Renew Max Panel (75 in), RevitalCore X-Elevate Pro (71.65 in)
  • Suits daily home use where a wall or corner can be dedicated

Masks, pads, mats, blankets and handhelds (Wearable)

  • Strap on, lay on, wrap in or wear; often cordless or low wattage
  • Examples: FlexBeam (strap-on, rechargeable), Lumara Pad (11 x 11 in to 20 x 30 in), TheraFace Mask, LumaHelmet, LumaBag 360 (fold-out wrap), ZAQ LIVO mat (1,120 LEDs), ZAQ Alya blanket (180 x 80 cm)
  • Suits targeted areas, travel, small spaces, or lying-down sessions with no stand to set up

Mobile and articulating systems (Professional)

  • Large panel on a wheeled, rotating or articulating base
  • Examples: Lumara PRO (articulating arm), Galaxy Zero GALAXA (72.3 x 34.3 in panel, 225 lb), LumaMobile (fits over a massage table)
  • Suits clinics, studios and multi-user households

Wavelength: what the nm numbers mean

Wavelength, measured in nanometers (nm), sets the color of the light. Below about 700 nm the light is visible; above that it is near-infrared (NIR) and you will see little or nothing even when the LEDs are on.

Band Typical nm on our listings What you will see
Blue 415, 450, 460, 470, 480 Visible blue light
Green / amber / yellow 520, 525, 532, 590 Visible green, amber or yellow
Red 610, 630, 633, 650, 655, 660, 670 Bright visible red
Near-infrared 810, 830, 850, 940, 980, 1060 Faint glow or nothing visible

More wavelengths is not automatically more light

A panel can list eight or nine wavelengths while most of its LEDs sit at two or three of them. The EXESAS ELITE 1800PRO publishes its chip split, which is a good model to ask for: of 360 dual-chip LEDs, 252 are 660 nm and 252 are 850 nm, while 480, 525, 940 and 1060 nm get 12 each. Neither approach is wrong. Just know which wavelengths carry most of the output.

Focused designs (Fewer bands)

  • Lumara Illuminate Red: 1,980 LEDs, all at 660 nm
  • Lumara VISO mask: 660 nm only, no infrared
  • Epoch Helios: single 980 nm
  • LumaVest: 660 nm and 850 nm at a 1:1 ratio
  • ZAQ Alya blanket and LIVO mat: 660 nm and 850 nm

Multi-wavelength designs (More bands)

  • EXESAS full-body panels: 630, 660, 810, 850 nm
  • Renew Max and Panorama: 7 bands, 450 to 850 nm
  • RevitalCore X series: 8 bands, 630 to 1060 nm, each dimmable 1 to 100%
  • Lumara PRO: 5 bands, 415 to 950 nm
  • ZAQ IRZA: 4 bands, 460, 590, 630 and 850 nm

Buyer tip: Separate red and NIR switches (or per-wavelength dimming) let you run red only, NIR only, or both. If that control matters to you, confirm it on the spec sheet: EXESAS panels have RED and NIR buttons; RevitalCore X series panels adjust each wavelength individually.

Irradiance, and how it is measured

Irradiance is the light power landing on a surface, usually given in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²). It is the most quoted and most misunderstood number in this category, because the same panel can honestly produce very different readings.

1. Distance changes everything

Readings drop as you step back. Published values in mW/cm²:

Panel 3 in 6 in 9 in 12 in
Renew Red Light Max Panel 225 139 n/a 120
EXESAS ELITE 1800PRO 218 161 137 121

A figure with no distance attached (such as "over 224 mW/cm²" or "680 mW/cm² at 0 in") cannot be compared with one taken at 6 or 12 inches.

2. The meter matters

Low-cost solar power meters are calibrated for sunlight and tend to read LED panels high; spectrometers usually read lower. RevitalCore publishes both at 6 inches:

  • 164: mW/cm², X-Elevate Pro, solar meter
  • 85: mW/cm², X-Elevate Pro, spectrometer
  • 164 / 79: mW/cm², X-Aura Pro, solar meter / spectrometer

3. Units and energy

Some listings use watts per square meter: 380 W/m² equals 38 mW/cm² (Galaxy Zero GALAXA). Energy delivered over a session is joules per square centimeter (J/cm²): irradiance in mW/cm² times seconds, divided by 1,000. GALAXA lists about 45 J/cm² over 20 minutes, which matches its 38 mW/cm².

Ask for the test, not just the number: At what distance, with which meter, at the center or averaged across the panel, and by whom? An independent lab report carries more weight than a factory figure. If a listing does not say, we will ask the manufacturer.

LED count, power, flicker and EMF

LED count and wattage are easy to print on a box, but neither tells you how much light reaches you. Here is how to read them.

LED count vs output

A panel of 5 W dual-chip LEDs (two emitters per lens) can outperform one with many more low-power micro-LEDs, and the reverse can hold at close range. Compare irradiance at a stated distance and coverage area instead. For example, the 64-LED Renew Small Panel lists 125 mW/cm² at 3 in, while the 1,980 micro-LED Lumara Illuminate Red is designed to sit directly on the skin.

"Power class" vs actual draw

Many panels are named for their LED rating (number of LEDs x 5 W), not the power they pull from the wall. EXESAS lists both, which is what you need for planning:

EXESAS panel LEDs Power class Actual draw Coverage at 12 in
1000W 200 1,000 W 265 W 49 x 22 in
600 LED 600 3,000 W 800 W 72 x 27 in
1008 LED 1,008 5,040 W 1,300 W 86 x 35 in
1216 LED 1,216 6,080 W 1,650 W 89 x 37 in

Steady vs pulsed light (Flicker)

  • Flicker is unintended rapid on-off cycling, often from low-cost drivers, and may not be visible
  • "Pulse" or "Hz" settings (up to 9,999 Hz on RevitalCore and Renew; 10 Hz and 40 Hz modes on the ZAQ Alya) are deliberate modulation that you select; ask whether a steady, non-pulsed mode is available (the Alya also has a constant mode)
  • Listings stating no flicker include EXESAS, Renew and RevitalCore X series
  • A slow-motion phone video is a quick home check

Electric and magnetic fields (EMF)

  • Any powered device produces some field near its electronics
  • Claims vary: EXESAS lists "0 EMF at 3 in"; Renew lists "low EMF"
  • Ask which field was measured (magnetic, electric or radio frequency), the meter used, and the distance
  • Fields fall off quickly with distance from the driver and cord

Where it goes and what it plugs into

Panels are far simpler to install than beds, but large ones are heavy, need clearance to stand back, and can use most of a household circuit.

  • 15 A, 120 V: outlet listed for EXESAS panels up to the 6,080 W class
  • 13.42 A: peak at 120 V for RevitalCore X-Elevate Pro (1,610 W peak)
  • 86 lb: EXESAS 1216 panel weight (75 x 22 in)

Power

  • Check actual amps. A device drawing 12 to 14 A at 120 V uses most of a standard 15 A circuit. Avoid sharing that circuit with a space heater or hair dryer, and consider a dedicated circuit for the largest panels.
  • Avoid long, thin extension cords for high-draw panels; plug in directly or use a cord rated for the load.
  • Some panels list 100 to 240 V input (Renew, RevitalCore), which matters only if you travel or ship abroad.

Space and mounting

  • Leave room to step back. Most manufacturers recommend 6 to 12 in from the panel; you also need standing room in front and airflow behind for the cooling fans.
  • Door mounts suit lighter panels. For 40 lb and up, a floor stand or rolling stand is steadier. Check the stand's weight rating against the panel weight.
  • Stands are often brand-specific. Both EXESAS rolling stands fit EXESAS panels only: the manual stand hangs a panel horizontally at 30 to 61 in (120 lb capacity) for lying-down use; the motorized stand runs 30 to 64 in (130 lb) and switches between vertical and horizontal. RevitalCore offers floor, pneumatic and motorized stand options by model.
  • No stand at all. Mats and blankets such as the ZAQ LIVO and Alya need only a bed, couch or floor long enough to lie on, and fold or roll away after use.
  • Lead time. Renew Max and Panorama were listed as made to order, shipping within about 6 weeks; RevitalCore panels are also built to order.

Eye protection: These panels are very bright. Most listings include protective glasses or goggles (EXESAS, Renew, RevitalCore, Lumara). Confirm they are in the box, and plan a pair for each user.

FDA cleared, registered or general wellness

Term What it means What it does not mean
FDA cleared (510(k)) The FDA reviewed a premarket submission for a specific device and intended uses and found it substantially equivalent to a legally marketed device. Not "FDA approved." Covers only that model and those uses, not the rest of a brand's line.
510(k) exempt The device type is exempt from premarket review. No clearance exists for that model.
FDA registered / listed The maker has registered its facility and listed products with the FDA. Not a review or clearance of the device.
General wellness Sold under FDA general wellness guidance, no medical claims. No FDA review of the device.

What our product listings say (as of October 2026)

  • Lumara PRO: listed as FDA cleared, clearance K200751.
  • Lumara VISO mask: listed as FDA 510(k) cleared, Class II medical device.
  • Lumara Pad: listed as FDA cleared, Class II, product code ILY.
  • Therabody TheraFace Mask: listed as FDA cleared.
  • FlexBeam: listed as a Class II FDA-exempt medical device (IEC 60601 standards listed).
  • Lumara Illuminate Red: listed as a general wellness low-risk device.
  • RevitalCore panels: list "FDA" among certifications; ask whether that means registration or clearance.
  • Renew Red Light panels: state they are general wellness devices, not medical devices.
  • ZAQ Alya, LIVO and IRZA: sold as general wellness devices; no FDA clearance is stated in their listings.

Ask for documentation: For any clearance claim, ask for the 510(k) number and look it up in the FDA's public 510(k) database. Check that it names the model you are buying and read what uses it covers.

Electrical safety listings: CE, RoHS and FCC are not U.S. electrical safety listings. Ask whether the device or its power supply carries ETL, UL or CSA (LumaBag 360 lists a UL listed power supply).

What it costs beyond the price tag

Red light panels have no consumables, so long-term cost comes down to accessories, electricity, warranty and how long the LEDs are rated to last.

Cost item What to plan for
Purchase From $299 (Lumara Pad, smallest size) and $529 (EXESAS 1000W panel) up to $27,500 (Galaxy Zero GALAXA), as of October 2026.
Stand or mount Base stands are often included. EXESAS horizontal rolling stand from $399; motorized stand from $889. RevitalCore X-Elevate Pro is $4,499 with no stand and $5,399 with the motorized stand.
Electricity Actual watts x hours = kWh. A 1,650 W panel run 20 minutes uses about 0.55 kWh; a 265 W panel about 0.09 kWh. Multiply by your utility rate.
Eyewear Usually included; extra pairs for additional users.
Shipping and lead time Confirm with us; some panels ship from stock, others are made to order.

Warranty and LED life

Warranty listed Examples
1 year TheraFace Mask, LumaVest, LumaHelmet, LumaBeauty, Epoch Helios

Rated LED life also varies: 50,000 hours on RevitalCore X series, 40,000 hours on Lumara Illuminate Red, 100,000 hours on EXESAS and Renew. Read the warranty terms for what is covered (parts, labor, LEDs), who pays return shipping, and whether you deal with the brand or with us.

Buyer tip: Renew lists a 30-day return period (refund minus shipping) and Lumara lists a 30-day money-back guarantee on several items. Return terms differ by brand, so ask before you order.

Questions to ask before buying

Bring this list to any seller, including us. A good answer is specific and written down.

  • Which wavelengths does it use, and how many LEDs are at each one?
  • Can red and near-infrared be switched or dimmed separately?
  • What is the irradiance at 6 and 12 inches, not just at the surface?
  • Was irradiance measured with a spectrometer or a solar meter, and by whom? Is there an independent lab report?
  • What is the coverage area at the distance I will actually use?
  • What is the actual power draw in watts and amps at 120 V, as opposed to the "power class"?
  • Does it flicker at any setting? Can pulsing be turned off?
  • What EMF readings were taken, for which field type, at what distance and with what meter?
  • Is it FDA cleared? If so, what is the 510(k) number and does it cover this exact model?
  • Does the panel or its power supply carry an ETL, UL or CSA listing?
  • What mounting is included, and which stands fit it? What is the stand's weight rating?
  • Are protective glasses included, and how many pairs?
  • What does the warranty cover, for how long, and who handles a claim?
  • What is the return policy, and who pays return shipping?
  • Is it in stock or made to order? What is the delivery time?
