Blisspod Milano 3 person full spectrum infrared sauna with glass door

Infrared vs. Full Spectrum Saunas

"Infrared" and "full spectrum" are the two labels you will see most when shopping for a home sauna. They sound similar, but they describe different heater setups. Here is the plain-English difference, based on the saunas we carry.

Far infrared saunas

A far infrared (FIR) sauna uses carbon panel heaters that emit far infrared wavelengths. Most of the Dynamic saunas we sell, such as the Avila, Barcelona, Serena, Lugano and Bellagio, fall into this group. They are built from Canadian hemlock, use low EMF carbon heaters and plug into a standard 120V outlet, which makes them a simple first sauna for a spare room or basement. Maxxus far infrared saunas, such as the Seattle, Bellevue, Avignon and Chaumont, come in low EMF and near zero EMF (ZF) versions, in Canadian hemlock or red cedar.

Full spectrum saunas

A full spectrum sauna adds near and mid infrared heaters alongside the far infrared panels, so you get all three wavelengths in one cabin. Golden Designs Reserve Edition and Blisspod models such as the Milano, Helsinki and Bergen are full spectrum. Some Blisspod RED models also add a red light panel, chromotherapy lighting and Wi-Fi control.

How the wavelengths differ

  • Near infrared is the shortest wavelength and is absorbed just below the skin's surface.
  • Mid infrared is a little longer and reaches slightly deeper for a warmer feel.
  • Far infrared is the longest and gives the deep, enveloping warmth infrared saunas are known for.

Other things to compare

  • Size: our saunas range from 1 person up to 5-6 person cabins.
  • Power: most run on 120V, but some larger cabins (for example the Golden Designs Toledo and Blisspod Vienna RED and Venetian RED) need a dedicated 220/240V circuit installed by an electrician.
  • EMF: Dynamic lists its heaters as low EMF, while Golden Designs Reserve Edition models and Maxxus ZF models are listed as near zero EMF.
  • Extras: Bluetooth audio, chromotherapy lighting and outside control panels vary by model.

Which is right for you?

If you want a straightforward, plug-in sauna, a far infrared model is the simplest choice. If you want every wavelength and more features in one cabin, look at full spectrum. You can compare both side by side in our Indoor Infrared Saunas collection, or call us at (855) 975-6272 and we will help you check size and power before you order.
